Fruited sours have had their work cut out for them when it comes to maintaining their place in the market, their popularity seemingly eaten into somewhat by the rise of hard seltzers, but plenty of breweries retain one in their lineup for drinkers after something different. And they always make a comeback when the mercury starts to rise too.
Bells Beach's raspberry sour – designed to be "refreshing like diving off your surfboard at Rincon on a summer's day" – is one of those available all year round. Tagged a Catharina Sour – a stronger-than-standard fruited kettle sour style with origins in Brazil – it pours with a colour you'd call pink blush, looking rather like a sparkling rosé in the glass. The upfront fruit quickly segues into a tart, slightly acidic, citrusy finish that is indeed rather refreshing.
