World Ocean Day at Gage Roads Freo

It's fair to say the oceans are taking a fair hammering these days, so any help we can give is most welcome. And given their Fremantle home is perched right on top of it, Gage Roads have long felt an affinity for the plight of the big blue and have been involved in various ocean health projects.

This year they've jumped on board with WA World Ocean Day to host an event that brings together experts, information, live music and good beer to help engage locals on the oceans' plight.

Throughout the day they'll be running a wetsuit upcycling drive where, thanks to the good folk at Upparel, you can bring in your old rubber and give it a second life as stuff like insulation, roof tiles, and stuffing for dog beds. And, since your old suit will be gone, you can nab a new plastic-neutral vest or spring suit – created in collaboration with green-minded surf wear brand Project Blank – with a $100 discount.

Two panel discussions will focus on the myriad of challenges and opportunities facing the oceans, featuring Paul Gamblin (Australian Marine Conservation Society), Dr Emily Lester (Fulbright Scholar University Hawaii), Emily Harrison (Flourishing Oceans at Minderoo Foundation) and others.

Following the panels, local muso Clay Western will be on stage and you can enjoy the tunes wth a few jars of a limited edition WA World Ocean Day beer on tap.

The event is free to attend, but you can register here.
