One of New Zealand's craft beer pioneers, Epic, has become the latest brewery to go into liquidation last week. As the liquidators, Waterstone Insolvency, seek a new buyer for the influential operation behind iconic beers such as Hop Zombie and Armageddon, the brewing company's longstanding Aussie importer has assured local fans and retailers that more Epic is on its way.
Modern Liquid – formerly Better Beer Imports – introduced Australian drinkers to Epic's beers well over a decade ago. Founder John Cope-Williams said the shock announcement from the "IPA giants" was "sad news" but told The Crafty Pint they have a small shipment of fresh Epic due to arrive in Australia next week, adding that they are trying to secure another shipment while they can.
According to an interview with Pursuit Of Hoppiness, Epic's owners made the decision suddenly after a deal to build their own brewery and taproom in Mt Wellington fell through when an investment partner pulled out without notice. They cited the challenges faced by brewers on this side of the Tasman too, from falling sales to the rising costs of ingredients, freight and more.
While they await further updates on the future of Epic, John said they have a first shipment of beer from another Auckland-based operation heading to Australia. Small Gods specialise in collaboration and the creating of experimental and rarely-seen historical styles.
