Beer & Food: Black Forest

Beer & Food: Black Forest

OK, so other than the cherries added to the glass this isn’t strictly beer and food, but where else to file Crafty’s first beer cocktail?

A couple of weeks back we brought you the news that Beer DeLuxe had introduced a new beer cocktail menu, incorporating beers and the ingredients of beer, such as malty wort and hop-infused spirits. And now they’ve been kind enough to send us one of their recipes so you can try it at home.

In the spirit of fairness, we thought it best to avoid anything that required you to obtain fresh hop flowers to infuse into vodka over a hot water bath (although don’t let us discourage you if you’re feeling suitably inspired). Instead, here is a cocktail in which they’ve used the Hitachino Nest Sweet Stout, for which you can substitute any stout of your choosing. Who knows, if it goes well you’ll be attempting Holgate Temptress pannacottas a la Chris Badenoch on last night’s Iron Chef in no time.

Black Forest

20ml Cherry Brandy
15ml 42 below Vodka
1 bar spoon Maraschino Cherry Liquid
1 bottle Hitachino Sweet Stout
2 Maraschino Cherries

Goblet style

Place Brandy, Vodka, Cherry Liquid and a small amount of Stout into chilled glass.
Stir with bar spoon. Add cherries to the glass and top with the remaining stout.

Simples! If anyone’s got any creations of their own, feel free to send them in with a photo and we’ll feature then on the site.

And if you want to learn more, book a place at the next Ale Stars at The Local Taphouse in St Kilda, which is all about beer cocktails.
