There's little doubt that the Pinnacle is one of North Fitzroy's most striking structures. An impossibly sharp wedge of a building complete with statues and a turret that rises from one side of St George's Road, just up from the heart of the inner north Melbourne suburb, it's got a colourful history too.
Originally the suburb's land office, where locals would climb to the top floor and point out which spot of land they were after, it became a Post Office for many a moon, before more recently operating as an antique shop. Its latest transformation is surely the best yet, however, as it's now one of the city's top boozers.
Its current owners took over in 2006 and, while they've kept some of the features and decorations that hark back to its former lives, they've set about turning it into the sort of pub that Melbourne does well. At the heart of that transformation has been an increasing focus on quality beer, with an ever-growing number of taps dedicated to craft beer and cider and an impressive list of bottled beers from around the world reflecting the owner's and staff's love of the good stuff.
Mountain Goat was the first local to begin encroaching on space previously occupied by the big brewers, soon to be followed by the likes of 2 Brothers and Cavalier. Now, with more rotating taps added, you'll find all manner of local and international brewers showcased. As a result, the amount of beer being shifted over the bar has "gone through the roof" - meaning that kegs are tapped as soon as they arrive (a sweet side benefit of the building's lack of cellar space), ensuring the bar staff are pouring some of the freshest crafties in Melbourne.
As for the kitchen, its focus on quality, affordable pub grub saw it named runner-up for Best Pub Food by Time Out Melbourne in 2014, while the wine list is short and focused on well priced quality. In November 2015, a fire destroyed the kitchen with restoration work delayed by the need to work with insurers and Heritage Victoria, but the pub returned to its full glory in spring 2017.
You don't become a good boozer, particularly in an area like North Fitzroy with its eclectic collection of locals, without offering that little bit extra too. At the Pinnacle that means live music several times a week – often jazz, country, funk or blues – plus DJs on other nights, including Wednesdays when the pub hosts a popular soul night. There's a pool room and an awesome courtyard/beer garden you'd never know existed from the outside and regularly plays host to live music. And, if that isn't enough to tempt you to check it out, their weekly trivia night is run by none other than Elvis himself.
