Burnley Brewing Close Their Richmond Taproom; Enter Liquidation

UPDATE 09/09: On September 9, Burnley Brewing appointed Worrells as liquidators, according to documents filed with ASIC.

Burnley Brewing are to close their Richmond taproom. In an announcement posted to social media, they said they had reached the position with deep sadness but that "circumstances beyond their control" had led to the difficult decision.

"We are feeling for staff across our production, sales and hospitality teams who put so much of themselves into making Burnley successful and are processing this situation. Despite their immense dedication and hard work, circumstances beyond their control have led to this difficult decision."

The social post went on to say that, as they wind down operations, their taproom will remain open from August 14 for takeaway sales.

"We're uncertain how long takeaway operations will continue for, please pop in soon to avoid missing out," the post stated.

The announcement comes at a tumultuous time for the local industry, with many breweries having closed, entered voluntary administration, or sold over the past couple of years. Following the latest increase in excise tax, the Independent Brewers Association called for government action to support the industry, while the plight of the sector was recently covered in some depth by the Good Weekend

Burnley opened the doors to their taproom in 2017, going on to build a considerable reputation for their German-style beers and traditional lagers. As well as brewing on a 500-litre system at their Bridge Road brewpub, they operate a production brewery in Dandenong where they also produce and package drinks for others.

Below is the full post from the brewery. We'll update this article with more on future plans.

Burnley Brewing's Statement

It is with deep sadness that today we have to announce the closure of our Richmond Taproom.

We are feeling for staff across our production, sales and hospitality teams who put so much of themselves into making Burnley successful and are processing this situation. Despite their immense dedication and hard work, circumstances beyond their control have led to this difficult decision. Our thoughts are also with our taproom customers who are impacted by our closure. We certainly did not anticipate 2024 unfolding this way.

As we wind down operations, we will open our taproom for takeaway sales only from Wednesday, August 14.

We will be offering significant discounts on our remaining stock:

  • Tap beers - $5 per litre - BYO growler or sealable vessel.
  • Cans - from 40% off
  • Merch - from 40% off Glassware - heavily discounted Framed artwork - $10 each

We're uncertain how long takeaway operations will continue for, please pop in soon to avoid missing out.

  • Opening hours:
    • M-T: closed
    • W-F: 4pm - 8pm
    • S: 12-8pm
    • S: 12-6pm

Love, the Burnley Brewing team.
