Nestled at the bottom of the world, winters in Hobart linger dark and cold. But with the chill, comes many of life’s pleasures – crisp mornings under a snow-capped kunanyi, sinister festivals that celebrate the strange, and the array of winter releases from our favourite breweries.
One of those revered releases is Shambles Brewery’s annual collaborative stout with Zimmah, the coffee roasters located in the alley behind the brewery. For 2024, they've come back together for Stakeout, a particularly decadent offering that sees them inviting adored Hobart patisserie, Queens Pastry, to the party. So which sweet treat have the brewers recklessly thrown into the beer? Naturally, they picked coffee’s perfect partner in crime - doughnuts.
The stout pours a rich, opaque black. Take a whiff and you’ll be met with roasted coffee beans while the first sip reveals a well-balanced sweetness. With every swig, doughnut and bold coffee hit your palate, however, there’s just a slight bitterness and the beer is rounded out with a velvety, full-bodied mouthfeel. Essentially, it’s an ideal treat for indulging yourself this winter.
Treat yo self.
