Easy-drinking pilsner, kolsch, pale or lager are often thought of as gateway crafty beers but, for me, the beer that turns a casual into a craft fiend is something good on a tasting paddle. The Art of Flight Series by Seeker Brewing is equal part paddle experience at home and cunning business practice: a four-pack of 250ml tins, each featuring the sort of bigger beers you might baulk at in a 440ml can, making for an appealing and cost effective package for the drinker seeking variety.
For the first four, Seeker have given the beers simple names, so I'm going to provide simple notes based on sight, scent and taste.
Mango Razz Smoothie Sour (7%)
Appearance: Opaque and hazy mauve and burnt orange
Aroma: Sweet mango and yoghurt, similar to a mango lassi
Taste: Rich with pulp, appropriately smoothie like. Sweet and velvety mango and ice cream flavours over a patient and slightly prickly sour finish.
New Wave Hazy DIPA (7.5%)
A: Orchard-grown grapefruit rind, suitably hazy
A: Fragrant passionfruit, pineapple and parsley
T: Cream and cashmere texture. Hop forward with a bitter sweet pineapple balance. Hop combination feels far greater than just Mosaic and Nelson Sauvin.
Revamped West Coast DIPA (8.5%)
A: Gold, impressive white head
A: Sour strawberry lollies, a nice field to go for a walk in
T: Big and impactful. Massive hop flavours, unctuous, savoury and lingering. Mineral water notes hiding amongst Nelson Sauvin and Citra hops.
Picnic Time Pastry Stout (8.5%)
A: Dark chocolate
A: Coco, peanuts and baked vanilla
T: Bitter dark chocolate balanced with subtle buttery croissant sweetness. Caramel and decadent alcohol content team up to hit like a cigar.
