When the Grifter Brewing Company burst onto the Sydney scene in the middle of 2012, it was with a pale ale they'd named Edward. Unfiltered, using all-Australian hops and originally brewed because they thought it would be something their friends would like to drink, it wasn't necessarily your regular pale by design. But it proved popular. Very popular. So much so, in fact, that the first ever keg ran out within two hours and, in its debut year, Edward made it into both critic and consumer-rated top 100 beer lists. Needless to say, they haven't stopped brewing it since and for three years it was the only permanent release in the Grifter range. Once they opened the doors to their own brewery in Marrickville, it was joined by three other beers in a permanent lineup but the OG pale ale – now minus the Edwardian name – will likely always remain their flagship brew, and for good reason.
