The Black Is Beautiful project was kicked off by Texan brewery Weathered Souls earlier in 2020. It's a global collaboration in which breweries were invited to create a beer based upon the same stout recipe to raise awareness for injustices faced by people of colour as well as funds for related causes. Ballarat's Dollar Bill were one of the Aussie brewers to get involved, taking the Weathered Souls' blueprint and shooting it through with their unique DNA to create a blended sour imperial stout.
The result is an 8 percent ABV beer that's light on its feet for one of that size and colour; there's the dark chocolate and roasted edged you'd expect to find in an imperial stout, but the fruity acidity acts like a cleansing ale cutting through a rich dessert. The combination of indigenous and wild yeasts adds complexity and texture, leaving you to ponder why we don't see more soured stouts.
Profits from sales of the beer will be donated to The Bail Project, an American charity providing bail for those who can’t afford it.
