Collaborations between musical outfit COMA and the Wheaty Brewing Corps have been an ongoing thing for some time now, bringing us beers such as (COMA)toes IIPA, COMA Chameleon Mango Sour, and Rizzocato, which was the starting point for their now core range Rizzo Rice Lager. In 2021, the collaboration went down the Belgium route, taking the form of a session saison at 3.4 percent ABV and featuring pilsner, flaked oats, wheat and acidulated malts, Magnum, Mandarina Bavaria, Amarillo and Eclipse hops, plus orange peel and a Belle Saison yeast.
As for the name, Exquisite Corpse is the name of the project COMA undertook during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, contracting their entire roster to participate in a cohesive piece of work, and creating a way to pay artists when live music was not possible. And here, $2 from every can of Exquisite Corps will be donated to COMA who celebrated 16 years working with The Wheaty in July 2021.
The orange peel is quite noticeable in the aroma, coming through with a floral bouquet as well as a pithy spritz. There's subtle evidence of yeasty esters mixed in with the orange citrus too, while the very light yellow colour supports a bright white head cap. The orange contributes a slight juiciness while adding some zing in a beer that finishes very dry. Zesty and refreshing... Sing on, COMA.
