Between interest rates hikes and Brett Sutton leaving Victoria's public health system, 2023 offers little stability for Melburnians. But Hop Nation have a salve for any feelings of unease; Kalash is back. The barrel-aged imperial stout has been a mainstay of the brewery’s release schedule since 2016 and these days, comes to us as a set of twins. The Kalash Imperial Stout was aged in seasoned bourbon barrels for four months and from the first sip, I’d assumed they’d thrown a few lamingtons in there too. Not so it seems, with that flavour instead coming from the barrel itself which left behind vanilla and caramel that blends harmoniously with rich chocolate fudge.
The Whisky Edition went into barrels that were once housed with Bakery Hill Single Malt Whisky and while previous versions have been quite peaty, 2023’s instead brings that same level of chocolate fudge as its sibling with a more chocolate muffin-like mix courtesy of toffee, honey and nutmeg.
