New Beers

There has never been a time like now: more breweries releasing more new beers than ever before. Here, in The Crafty Cuppa, and in our weekly newsletter, we'll bring you details â€“ and, if we've sampled them, our honest, independent take – on as many of them as possible. Enjoy!

Mountain Goat Little Sister

Published January 10, 2013
We're really not sure any beer that brings to mind Billy Idol singing 'White Wedding is a good thing. However, when it's a new beer from Mountain Goat, perhaps we can be a little forgiving. Little Sister is, of course, the little sister to another of their beers, in this case Rapunzel, the brewery's regular annual release that takes the form of a Strong Belgian Golden Ale. No prizes for guessing what Little Sister is then... According to Eggborough Dave Brighton, the beer uses the same basic grist,… Read more

Moon Dog Dasher's Envy

Published December 24, 2012
Apparently this is a "Fancy Christmas Ale". We're not sure what that means, to be honest. Does it mean that there are brewers out there producing beers for the festive period that aren't fancy? Or have the Moon Doggers done something particularly out there for this one - perhaps swimming in the mash tun again? Perhaps the fact that they seem to have emptied the majority of the contents of their malt cupboard and spice rack into it has something to do with its elevated status - with a little… Read more

Hargreaves Hill The Phoenix

Published December 23, 2012
The first Phoenix was brewed back in 2010 to mark Hargreaves Hill's return to brewing after the original brewery was destroyed in Victoria's Black Saturday fires. A luxurious Imperial Red Ale that has stood the test of time quite magnificently, as we discovered in a tasting alongside the new batch recently, it has been brought back just in time for Christmas. Once again presented in a number of wax-sealed, limited edition (350) 750ml bottles, it's a beer you can set down for years to come. Alternatively,… Read more

Bridge Road / Local Taphouse 13 Hours On A Bus

Published December 21, 2012
It worked for the Yeastie Boys with their awesome Gunnamatta IPA, so why not invoke the spirit of Paul Kelly for another beer. With the sixth beer in the Bridge Road Bar Series featuring staff from the Local Taphouse venues in St Kilda and Darlinghurst, they decided to borrow a line from the singer's classic From St Kilda to Kings Cross for their Black India Saison that uses 13 ingredients, including spices in the form of juniper, nutmeg and cloves plus hops in the shape of Nelson Sauvin, Falconers… Read more

Mornington Peninsula Czech Pilsner

Published December 12, 2012
With the mercury rising and holiday season on the way, the Mornington Peninsula boys are serving up a pilsner for your delectation. Their latest seasonal is the brainchild of brewer Matt Inchley, designed to be as true to style as possible: all Saaz hops, pilsner malt, unfiltered. According to the man behind it, the beer is: "Deep burnished gold in colour ... with a dense, snow white head. Rich and complex aromas of grass and soft spice interweave with bready yeast notes. A spicy hop presence… Read more

Murray's Anniversary Ale 7

Published December 7, 2012
Among Australia's craft beer cognoscenti, Murray's annual anniversary releases are one of the year's most anticipated releases. The beers have generally followed a few common traits: big and barrel-aged for a start, with each vintage usually an evolution on the previous year. Last year's was a 15 per cent Belgian style barleywine featuring a handful of different yeasts and made from a blend of French and American oak-aged versions. This one follows a similar line but with the addition of cherry wood… Read more

Colonial Kottbusser

Published December 6, 2012
Mal Secourable, head brewer at Margaret River's Colonial Brewing Company, loves to brew German-inspired styles. It seems that he loves brewing them so much that it's impossible for us to get him to take the time out to tell us about any specials he's brewed. Thankfully, with Girl+Beer now calling the region her home, we have Crafty spies on the ground... Which means we know about the Kottbusser, a summer seasonal from Mal, which follows hot on the heels of the brewery's popular Baltic Porter. It's… Read more

Red Duck Topaz

Published December 5, 2012
Another day, another dollar. Or, in this case, another Red Duck beer. Latest cab off the rank is another that falls inside their bulging collection of strong pale ales as the Ballarat brewery continues what could be cast as a hop series of sorts. Inspiration for this single hop beer, which uses the Aussie hop Topaz, came about when brewing Hop Bach with Anders Kissmeyer earlier in the year. Among the 25 hops that went into that beer was this, a variety that has found a new lease of life as an aroma… Read more

Moon Dog Artisan Pouseuré

Published December 3, 2012
The words "Moon Dog" and "pumpkin", when used in tandem, send a shudder down the Crafty spine. Before the brewery launched, we were given a sample bottle of a trial Pumpkin Ale as a taster of what was to come. It miraculously disappeared one AFL Grand Final Day with nobody in attendance able to recall what could have happened to it. The mystery remains unsolved; our guilt unassuaged. Still, there have been subsequent chances to sample other Moon Dog pumpkin beers, including a… Read more

Bridge Road / Archive Tennessee Stud

Published December 3, 2012
We're a little late posting this one as it slipped out of Beechworth unnoticed at Crafty Towers, so we can't be sure what's left where. But for the sake of completeness, here's the fifth in the fast-moving Bar Series, this time featuring the input of the crew at Brisbane's Archive. They tell us: "We wanted to create something that reflects our varied backgrounds, collective love of our industry and that of delicious beer. Moon Dog Love Tap – Retired

Published November 30, 2012
Standards must be slipping at Moon Dog. I mean, seriously, when you've offered up buxom nurses holding breast-shaped cupcakes and cigar-smoking skulls on your labels, who's going to be satisfied with a pig in lime green bow tie and top hat? Next thing you know, they'll be brewing a lager. Thankfully, this is nothing of the sort, but instead the equivalent of drinking fresh hop goo, goo that's an amalgam of German, Aussie and Kiwi hops, an amalgam in which the New World hops carry out an almighty… Read more

Red Hill Christmas Ale 2012

Published November 29, 2012
This beer brewed in the depths of the Victorian winter to be ready in time for the festive season is one of Red Hill's longest-serving seasonals and, as with Christmas itself, is reassuringly consistent in its quality, albeit with a welcome lack of family arguments and late night meat sweats. A Belgian Dubbel by style, it's the colour of brandy snaps, pouring with a big, white head and full of dried fruit and spices of the star anise and cinnamon variety. It's moderately boozy at this relatively… Read more

Stone & Wood Garden Ale

Published November 28, 2012
It's not too often that Stone & Wood release a short run beer, what with having to brew six million litres of Pacific Ale every day to meet demand. But in time for summer comes the Garden Ale, a sub-four per cent ale with its eyes firmly fixed on the post-lawnmower set. Like the Stone Beer, there's inspiration from the past, with juniper berries added to the boil in a nod to pre-hop days when brewers would raid their gardens for ingredients. According to Stone & Wood, the berries are said… Read more

Bullant Bruthen Special Bitter

Published November 27, 2012
Bullant Brewery is Victoria's easternmost crafty outpost, a relatively new addition to the Aussie beer landscape that is not only bringing craft beer to East Gippsland but also offers the people of Bruthen the town's best dining spot too. Their summer seasonal has sessions on the brewery deck looking across the surrounding farmland in mind, as it's a four per cent English style bitter. Brewed with Maris Otter and crystal malts and East Kent Goldings hops, it couldn't be more traditional if it tried.… Read more

Lord Nelson Royal Red

Published November 26, 2012
With the last of the One-Eyed Rye disappearing from the taps at the Lord Nelson and featuring at Newcastle's Craft Beer Week, that means there's room for something new at the hotel in The Rocks. And that new thing is the Royal Red, another beer that follows the Lord's passion for all things British and beery. It's an English mild ale, designed with sessionability at heart, and coming with "a nice hop aroma, malty palate and drying bitterness on the finish." The Lord, which knows a thing… Read more

Moo Brew Saison 2012

Published November 23, 2012
For the second year running, Moo Brew has decided that their summer seasonal shall be a Saison. As before, this farmhouse ale is a light-bodied affair that has drinkers with their fingers poised over the "Drain and Repeat" button in its sights. Pale orange / yellow in appearance, it's a melange of spicy, fruity, citrusy esters. If the Crafty memory serves us correctly (and given how many times a week we spend hunting high and low for wallet, glasses, key, child, etc, this is not a given)… Read more

Mountain Goat Rapunzel 2012

Published November 21, 2012
They don't venture into Belgium too often at Mountain Goat, but when they do it tends to result in the appearance of this flaxen-haired maiden. A fixture in their annual release schedule for some time now, it's a strong golden ale inspired by the classic Duvel. True to its name it's strong (8.3 per cent) and golden in colour. And true to its heritage, it's a a slightly hazy number with clove, spice and vanilla aromas that's spicy and dry to taste. A previous incarnation spent time inside a Chardonnay… Read more

3 Ravens Bittersweet End

Published November 15, 2012
Melbourne's 3 Ravens marked 10 years of brewing beers this year. We say "marked" rather than "celebrated" as things haven't necessarily gone as planned, what with the building and brewery appearing to be on sale at one point and the whole affair looking close to disappearing. A solution has been found (we'll bring you news on that soon) and the tenth anniversary beer is here too. The aim was to create a 100 IBU (international bitterness unit), 10 per cent beer to mark the occasion.… Read more

Red Duck The Tiger

Published November 14, 2012
It looks like we got things a little out of whack with Red Duck recently. Turns out The Tiger was released when we said the Bell Hop was and vice-versa. But given the brewery is releasing 277 new beers every hour for the duration of 2012, it's a forgivable mistake. Anyhoo, for those interested in knocking back a Tiger, it's another nod to the Old Country from Red Duck: a strong pale ale inspired by those of the British Empire. Red Duck Sexy Thing

Published November 12, 2012
Journeys in Mother Pint's car when a child were rarely blessed with anything remotely approaching decent music. Her favourite musician - the result, one assumes, of meeting him when she was 13 and he was a young, untainted-by-Saviour's Day-and-Wimbledon pop star - was Cliff Richard. She had a soft spot for Chris de Burgh too. You get the idea.
