SuperBeast Cellar Tasting at HopDog (NSW)

Of all the esoteric limited release beers that comes of out HopDog BeerWorks, none is more revered in the realms of beer geekery than the annual SuperBeast.

Based on a barleywine style, the beer is never quite the same from year to year except in that it is always big, often confronting, and frequently polarising. It's also prone to changing with age, which brings us to this event.

Head Brewer Tim Thomas has jimmied open the cellar, dusted off the cobwebs of his personal stash and decided to host a small event sharing the past four vintages of SuperBeast. This will see a selection starting with 2013's peated barleywine, 2014's Americanised version, through 2015's black barley wine (which was rated our top pick in our Best NSW Beers of 2015 list) to the most recent 2016 version.

On the day, Tim will be calling on his now rather extensive brewing history to guide you through the brewery where they were made before guiding you through the beers themselves, how they've aged and changed, what you should be tasting and, just to complete the experience, pairing them with some local cheeses.

Unless you've got all these beers stashed away at home you'll not get another chance to do a side by side tasting like this so, if it sounds like something you'd like to be a part of, you'd best book a spot promptly. Email beer@hopdog.com.au or call 428 293132 to do so – tickets are $40.

The tasting starts at 3:30pm and runs for approximately two hours. Oh, and with every beer being over 10 percent ABV, you'd best arrange for someone to drive you home.

If you're not into barleywines, how about sours? On March 4 Tim will be dipping into The Sour Shelf and sharing a collection of his barrel aged sours.
