Job Description: Master Brewer 

Location: Artarmon, New South Wales, Australia 

Employment Type: Full-time 

Start Date: ASAP! Nov-Dec 2024 

Remuneration: Commensurate with Experience 

Reports to: General Manager 

Reports: Head Brewer (already hired) and Casual staff 

About Us: 

We are a new, community-focused brewery located in Artarmon, New South Wales, Australia. A state of the art PMG Brewery with 15hL Brewhouse and 30hL fermenters/brite tanks are arriving in coming weeks. We will pride ourselves on producing high-quality, innovative, and consistent brews.  Our medium-sized brewery is committed to creating exceptional experiences for our customers and fostering a positive and collaborative work environment. 

Position Overview: 

The Master Brewer will be responsible for overseeing all brewing operations, from recipe development to final product quality, ensuring efficient production processes and maintaining the highest standards of safety and cleanliness. The Master Brewer will lead, mentor, and manage the Head Brewer and casual brewing staff, ensuring the team operates cohesively and effectively. This role is integral to our commitment to delivering outstanding craft beers that exceed customer expectations. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Operational Management: Oversee the day-to-day operations of the brewery, including procurement, brewing, cellaring, packaging, and maintenance, ensuring all production targets are met on time and within budget. 
  • Quality Control: Maintain stringent quality control processes, conducting regular sensory evaluations, and laboratory tests to ensure consistency and high-quality beer production. 
  • Team Leadership: Supervise, mentor, and train the Head Brewer and casual brewers,  fostering a positive and productive work environment. Manage team schedules,  performance, and development plans. 
  • Recipe Development: Develop and refine recipes for core and seasonal beers, focusing on innovation while adhering to our brand standards and quality expectations. 
  • Process Improvement: Continuously evaluate and improve brewing processes, equipment efficiency, and overall brewery operations to enhance productivity and reduce waste. 
  • Compliance & Safety: Ensure all brewery operations comply with local and federal regulations, including OH&S, environmental, and excise laws. Maintain a safe working environment by enforcing health and safety protocols.
  • Inventory Management: Manage raw material inventory, including sourcing, ordering, and maintaining adequate stock levels to meet production needs. Optimize the use of ingredients to minimize costs without compromising quality. 
  • Budgeting & Cost Control: Assist in budget preparation and manage brewing costs effectively. Monitor expenses and implement cost-saving measures while maintaining quality standards. Lead our R&D Tax Incentive Program through to final delivery each year. 
  • Equipment Maintenance: Coordinate with the maintenance team to ensure all brewing equipment is functioning correctly, scheduling routine maintenance and troubleshooting as needed. 
  • Reporting & Documentation: Maintain accurate records of brewing processes, quality control, production volumes, and ingredient usage. Prepare reports for senior management as required. 

Qualifications and Skills: 

  • Experience: Minimum 7 years of brewing experience, including at least 3 years in a leadership role within a commercial brewery environment. 
  • Education: Degree in Brewing Science, Food Science, Chemistry, or related field. Certified  Master Brewer qualification is highly desirable. 
  • Technical Skills: Strong knowledge of brewing equipment, processes, quality control, and safety standards. Familiarity with modern brewing technology and software. 
  • Leadership: Proven ability to lead, motivate, and develop a diverse team. Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills. 
  • Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy in all aspects of brewing, from recipe development to documentation. 
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to work in a physically demanding environment, including lifting heavy materials and standing for long periods.
