Maybe they’re missing the warm air of summer or maybe they’re noticing members of Australia’s beer industry are starting to disappear Stateside for the annual Craft Brewers Conference. Either way, it looks like Good Land Brewing have the wide open road and desserts of Texas on their mind. Twisted Cactus is a prickly pear, agave and salted lime gose, and rather than being a mirage, it’s the kind of beer I’d personally like to have with me if I ever got trapped in desert. The mix of adjuncts make the beer appear a little like a cocktail without the hefty booze with the prickly pear sitting somewhere between kiwifruit and the white part of a passionfruit. Though it’s quite a sweet tropical medley, a substantial tartness, sality and savoury side brought by agave make it as thirst-quenching as sours come.
Gold Star meanwhile is a tribute to what the brewery calls the “warm, vibrant spirit of south Texas”. Having never been there, I think it’s safe to assume San Antonio is a little like Vienna, with the amber lager capturing the style that share’s the city’s name. Pouring with a warm orange hue, there's slightly sweet malt touch of caramel and bread notes while a distinct bitterness kicks in on the finish.
Yee-haw: Texas tastes grand.
