The flood of Oktoberfest events across Australia might be drying to a trickle as November approaches, but anyone hoping to keep things going can look to Phillip Island Brewing, who have released their festbier-inspired Oktoberfest Lager in cans.
Pouring a glowing ingot gold with a fair haze (albeit stopping well short of being anything you'd tag a hazy), the spicy and straw-like aromas and flavours suggest a fair whack of old world hopping has taken place, with any fruitiness seeming more yeast- than hop-driven. A suitably festbier-esque higher ABV aids both the sweetness and body of the doughy, cereal malts, albeit with said hopping ensuring any sweetness is kept in place by a dry bitterness.
Grab a pretzel and, tip a can or two into stein, and you’re well set to stretch Oktoberfest beyond the season.
