Good Beer Wheaty is back for 2016. Just knowing that should be enough to have you booking a charter flight to Thebarton. But if not, allow us to explain...
Spawned as a Good Beer Week spinoff, the days preceding the Melbourne festival have become very, very lively at The Wheatsheaf as they host a gamut of events and brewers from home and abroad.
And since they launched their own Wheaty Brewing Corps, things have gone up a gear or several; last year saw the brewers from Birra Del Borgo, Jester King, Victory, Beavertown and Doctor's Orders all pop by for a spot of spooning (collaborations, for the layperson).
This year's program is no less busy, with May 12 to 15 jam packed with fabulous brewers, weird ingredients, beer as art, contract brewing, big brewery buyouts, talk of tap contracts and a ridiculous amount of great beer.
Says head Wheaty Jade Flavell: "The Saturday ‘friendly shit-stir’ session with Maz [Hawkers] should be a cracker – it’s the first in what will be a regular GBW feature: the Good Beer Wheaty Soapbox / Politics of (Craft) Beer matinee. Tripoli, the Wheaty Brewing Corps / Hawkers Rosewater & Chamomile Tripel weighing in at 8.5 percent, should help lubricate discussion.
"We’ll also be handpulling the first ever Wild & Woolly beer seen in OZ: a bourbon oaked foreign extra stout."
