Pucker up for summer, WA beer fans, as Boston Brewing have conceived a strikingly sour fruited gose to take you into the festive season. Pouring a deep, burnished orange hue with low carbonation and no head retention, Golden Hour Sour pours more akin to fruit nectar than fruit beer. But, while carbonation is low, bold aromas of passionfruit, lemon and herb still emanate from the glass.
A big acid profile is front and centre, clean yet displaying notes of citrus with a gentle, balancing saltiness and short finish. Their 2023 signing as head brewer, Reid Stratton, has already offered up a couple of fruited beers, and this passionfruit and lemon myrtle sour is yet another win.
Accompanying it on tap and in fridges this summer is Mexican Lager, which Reid is eager to point out is now enjoying its third summer rather than following the hordes clambering aboard one of this year's trends. No matter the hype, Boston’s Mexican Lager fits the brief with impeccable timing: a summer quencher to see them through the scorching Perth heat, whether that's by the pool, watching cricket, mowing the lawn, or after the exuberance of Christmas lunch.
Brewed with a portion of corn and lemon zest atop a light lager base, this beer sits apart from the more restrained imported cousins. Fragrant citrus, gentle grassy and citrusy hops, and some saltine cracker character present very well alongside a crisp finish and lively, effervescent carbonation. It's a treat for the eyes, too: filtration and lagering have yielded impeccable clarity with a golden hue reminiscent of the baking sun on Chrissy Day. Delightful.
