Due to their delicate and deeply food-friendly beers, Sobremesa are one of those fermentaries and blendaries that you know are going to find friends in the world of wine. That’s particularly true when it comes to winemakers who, like the Melbourne brewing outfit, work closely with the natural world and Bandicoot Run are certainly fellow travellers. The organic grape growers and winemakers are based in West Gippsland where they focus on biodiverse farming principles and making delicious wine.
So when the opportunity arose to secure freshly-pressed grape skins from the winemakers at Bandicoot Run, Sobremesa's Casey Grieve jumped at the chance. The result is New Coat of Paint, a blend of three-year and six-month-old saison aged on chardonnay skins for eight weeks before undergoing five months of bottle conditioning. As mentioned up top, Sobremesa certainly make delicate beers and this is no exception with clean stone fruit notes of peach, nectarine and apricot that's reminiscent of those coconut-covered cubes you used to buy at the school canteen. The beer also features a lactic quality akin to a yoghurt bar and a grapefruit-marmalade note that complements the saison's underlying dryness and funky freshness.
