Felon’s Blueberry IPA cans were released in March 2022 but to understand the beer's origin, you really need to go back to early 2019. It was back then when the Felons brewers were enjoying a trip to a blueberry farm in Crows Nest, a couple of hours west in Brisbane, sharing some beers and indulging in blueberries with the farmers behind the fruit. As they walked the aisles of that farm and tasted blueberries fresh off the bush, the Felons team were suddenly captured by the combination of sweetness, acidity and fresh berry flavour and their collective minds turned towards getting that fruit into a beer. Fast forward two years and the brewery released a very limited run of Blueberry IPA in keg only, with the beer proving to be their most popular season to date. That brings us to today, with the Brisbane brewery giving the beer something of a wider release, although it's still quite limited in the sense that there are only 5,000 individually numbered cans that have been sent out into the world.
The beer that's proved so popular with Felons fans uses the all-American combination of Mosaic and El Dorado hops and some 400 kilograms of blueberries while the inclusion of oats in the malt bill, alongside Pale and Vienna, make it quite smooth IPA. The smoothness of the base proves an excellent launching point for the underlying sweet berry flavour that’s akin to enjoying some fresh jam but you'll also find much more classic IPA flavours with quite a tropical array of juicy flavours and a light touch of pine.
