Melbourne’s Bonehead Brewing have a lot of love for brewing a wide mix of beer styles and as this trio of beers shows, they tend to release beers across a wide range of styles. Certainly, the most unusual of this trio has to be Choke Berry’s New Sound – which seems fitting given the beer was brewed for GABS 2022. The mixed culture sour contains the somewhat unusual chokeberry (well, it's the first time I've tried it in a beer anyway) while also being packed with vanilla and marshmallow spread that was specially made by Bonehead’s mates at Twisted Dessert Bar in Fitzroy. It’s a combination that could easily not work but certainly does, with a mixed berry flavour covered in soft and sweet marshmallow and vanilla for a ride that’s so decadent it might well send you Back to the Future.
But if classic beers are what excites you then, Bonehead have you covered with Traditional Bavarian Märzen. The classic Bavarian-style lager was brewed with traditional step mashing and extended lagering to create a beer that's clean, crispy and quite elegant. It pours a stunning auburn colour while that mix of malt provides an array of biscuit and toffee flavours while the lightest touches of floral and spiced notes gently waft from the beer.
Finally, Electric seems to sit somewhere between the two other beers given it’s not traditional but not nearly as left-of-centre as Choke Berry. Instead, it’s a blood orange and tangerine gose that’s quite dry and tangy and where the rich juicy flavour of blood orange and more zesty tangerine gentle wash across your palate.
