As I noted while writing about Cornella Brewery's Astro Dude in November, I was disappointed to acknowledge it’d be their final hoppy release of the year, expecting it could be quite a few months before their next IPA. Thankfully, they've not messed about and released the aptly named Paradise Pine barely two weeks into 2024.
Deep gold with beautiful clarity, the beer has in spades the kind of bitter, piney characters lovers of big and more old school double IPAs love, with a hint of alcohol warmth. The brewing team at Cornella have an affinity for the tropical hop flavours of NZ variety, Nectaron which they've paired with America's Chinook. While the brew is undeniably bold in certain aspects, its tropical citrus aroma and flavour are presented with subtlety, followed by a welcome dank finish that ticks the final IIPA box. It's a 440ml can so could be worth sharing but taking time with one of these for yourself will yield rewards, bringing out even more tropical pine characters on the nose and the palate.
