There are precious few wheat beers made by Australian craft outfits but Red Hill Brewery have always kept the Germanic tradition alived on the Mornington Peninsula with their traditional hefeweizen. Fittingly, as the mercury starts to drop for the year, Red Hill have forged a suitably darker beer of tradtion, Blacksmith Dunkel Weizen; which combines the esters of a classic hefe with the dark-malt characters of a dunkel.
It means there's plenty by the way of dark chocolate to be enjoyed which combines with the beer's thick and textural mouthfeel to wade into chocolate cake territory. Pouring a dark copper hue, there's also a whisper of roasted coffee which is joined by banana, cloves and raisins and while that all might sound like a slice of something you'd by from a country bakery window, a sustained bitterness reveals a beer forged with balance.
