It says something when a brewery has a limited edition beer in its oeuvre that's been around longer than the majority of brewing companies in Australia. But when you're fast approaching your 25th anniversary that's the sort of trick you have up your sleeve.
The 2024 release of Millennium Falcon is the eleventh iteration of the beer since it first appeared in 2013. It's changed over time, these days sitting at 9 percent ABV but always featuring a blend of older and new hop varieties. This year's pours with the sort of golden glow that only higher ABV beers – whether IIPAs or big Belgian golden ales – can create; put one in front of a beer lover and see how long they can resist before diving in.
As for the liquid, it’s candied fruit galore, like a bag of jelly fruits – pineapple, grapefruit, peach and more – turned into a boozy reduction. There’s a little stickiness present but a broad, steady-as-she-goes bitterness with a touch of grassy resin about it is there to bring this ship back down to earth.
