As the temperature dips in WA’s South West, brewers across the region are dropping darker offerings in an effort to help beer drinkers combat the cold. Shelter are no exception, with their latest noir-leaning tipple brewed with another southwestern delight in mind: fresh bakery goods. While you won’t find any actual donuts, croissants or meat pies within the tin, Bakehouse Stout pays homage to the rural icon that is the humble bakery.
A hybrid of breakfast stout and export stout, Bakehouse is roasty upfront with big coffee notes alongside some gentle smoke and bitterness from dark malts. There’s underlying chocolate and dark fruits, and if you try really hard, there’s even a faint character of cinny scrolls and pain au chocolat. A medium body carries bitterness into a long finish and, while the 6.1 percent ABV isn’t quite pastry stout spec, it is noteworthy given an otherwise high drinkability.
Two of South West WA’s biggest draws are breweries and bakeries; here, you can have your cake and eat it.
