Pouring a deep, burnt orange hue, this creation from the ever-innovative Boston Brewing blends native Australian spice with a rich, rye-heavy red ale, leaving the drinker with something big, bold and entirely moreish.
Landing at a sizeable 8 percent ABV, the Boston brewers have built a malt profile that balances the influence of alcohol with a robust base. Specialty malts provide caramel, burnt sugar and breadiness alongside gentle rye spice and earthiness. Despite the amped-up ABV and complex malt profile, the wattleseed still presents – subtly but clearly – with its influence contributing nuttiness, coffee and brown sugar.
While beers brewed with native ingredients, such as fellow WA brewer Beerfarm’s Native Series, aren’t uncommon, brewing with the often subtle characteristics of such ingredients can be a challenge. Here, Boston have done a great job of allowing the character of their chosen addition to make its presence even in such a hefty beer.
