Beerland have done it again... Just four years on from their first Champion Australian Beer at the Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA) in Melbourne, they've picked up a second. Their first was claimed in 2018 by Wheat; the second prestigious award has gone to something a little more unique: Blueberry Clouds, an imperial sour brewed for GABS 2022.
The brewers used pilsner and wheat malts to create a solid Berliner weisse base upon which to build, before adding 63kg of Tropico Blueberry Purée – 50 grams per litre – plus lactose and vanilla. The result is a bold blueberry fruit juice hit with a soft, pillowy mouthfeel and a finish that's candy like with a pleasing, zippy tang courtesy of the kettle souring.
It's the second year a fruited sour of some form has claimed the Champion title – and the first time a beer that can be tagged a "pastry sour" has taken the top spot too – so step up and take a ride on the Ferris wheel of flavour!
