All Inn Brewing The Dopplenator

Published September 30, 2022
Can we first take a moment to marvel at the artwork on the can? All Inn have taken the traditional -ator suffix for naming a doppelbock, and applied it in the way that tickles the 90s nostalgia many of us have for Arnie films. And if it looks like we’re shedding a tear for the sacrificial destruction of a robot assassin that served as a father figure for a rebellious teen, be assured it’s just the pollen in the air at this time of year. Ahem. The beer. At first glance, I thought Dopplenator was… Read more

BentSpoke Keep It Simple JAIPA

Published September 30, 2022
One assumes there was a tongue or two planted firmly in cheek when BentSpoke were going through the naming process. "Keep It Simple." "Just Another IPA". Right oh. Perhaps there's even a bit of a play on words going on here: JAIPA sounds a bit like Jaipur, not just a city in India but also the name of UK brewery Thornbridge's iconic IPA. Certainly, when I poured a can fresh from the fridge into a glass, held the very slightly hazy pale golden liquid to the light, then took a sniff,… Read more

The Mill Brewery Southern Lights

Published September 30, 2022
Back in April, The Mill Brewery explored some of the northern hemisphere's favourite hops with Northern Lights and for Spring 2022, they’ve looked to the skies a little closer to home. Southern Lights is an NZ IPA brewed with Nelson Sauvin and Nectaron, alongside some additional Idaho 7 and Citra Cryo from the US. It’s quite a modern IPA too and borrows from both the West Coast and juicy camps with a combined wealth brought by a soft and lush mouthfeel and a decent bitterness. The hops meanwhile… Read more

Sailors Grave Swamp Thing & Sunken Bounty

Published September 30, 2022
Besides forcing me to fight the urge to put on The Grid's novelty-techno earworm of the same name [don't fight it, feel it, James], the arrival of Swamp Thing from Sailors Grave offers another chance to see how the brewers fare when tackling a more-normal-than-their-standard-fare, hop-driven beer. Past experience has shown that, while they favour the esoteric, the East Gippsland crew tend to do such things with aplomb. In this case, you have a black IPA with the appearance of a robust porter and… Read more

Cheeky Monkey Feijoa & Hibiscus Sour

Published September 30, 2022
Flexing their creative muscles yet again, this times in the realm of fruit-laden sours, the Cheeky Monkey crew have released a feisty feijoa and hibiscus sour in honour of outgoing senior brewer Gav Williams. The pinky-orange hue when poured is eye-catching, while perky sweet guava and pineapple dominate the aroma. A modest level of acid is prominent on tasting, met by sweetly tropical feijoa, green apple, guava and a touch of something more herbaceous. The finish is short and sharp, as expected… Read more

Local Brewing Co Talus WCIPA

Published September 29, 2022
Towards the end of 2021, Local Brewing Co gave Strata a starring role with their West Coast IPA Stratum, which also featured two American classics in Simcoe and Amarillo. Now they’ve followed it up with Talus WCIPA, which once again picks those two hops as more background players and lets another shine. If you’re family with Talus, the American hop is an impressive varied one, with descriptors like oak, wood and coconut (it’s a daughter of Sabro after all) applied to the variety, alongside… Read more

Atomic Lemon Whip & Mando Sour

Published September 28, 2022
These no chance of catching scurvy at Atomic right now courtesy of this dual citrus sour release, which brings a zippy edge to the ebbing cooler months. After claiming the GABS People’s Choice for 2022 – which you can read about here, Atomic’s Lemon Whip Sour has been made available in cans. As before, juicy lemon, creamy lactose, and a hint of biscuit base deliver a pastry sour crying out for some homespun flambéed meringue action. Joining the Whip is Mando Sour – a beer which I’ve misread… Read more

Modus Mic Drop Strong Pale Ale

Published September 28, 2022
I love the smell of orange oil. An orange twist is my favourite garnish on a cocktail, and I’ve said in another write-up that whenever I eat an orange I walk through the house squeezing the bits of peel to spray orange oil in each room. (Believe it or not, yes, my wife does make fun of me for this.) So I when I poured out a can of Mic Drop and inhaled the strongest aroma of orange oil I’ve ever smelled in a beer, I was enchanted. As clear as the aroma of orange oil coming off the top of this… Read more

TWØBAYS Nectaripa NZ IPA

Published September 28, 2022
New Zealand’s Nectaron has become a much-loved hop for brewers on these shores and beer drinkers have steadily embraced it too. Now thanks to TWØBAYS, those who can’t drink gluten can enjoy a taste of the hop, with the brewery launching Nectaripa. The NZ IPA also features Nelson Sauvin and Wai-iti hops from across the ditch and the brewery says it’s their boldest IPA to date. Bold is certainly the word that comes to mind, with Nectaripa providing quite an intense hit of stonefruit, white… Read more

Tumut River Brewing Co Bert's Honey: Anniversary Edition

Published September 27, 2022
A year ago, Tumut River brewer Bert got married, and the brewery made a beer to celebrate the occasion: Bert’s Honey. This year, they’ve made another version of the beer to celebrate Bert and Kat’s anniversary, complete with gushing dedication on the label by TRBC owner Tim. A little recipe tweaking of last year’s version - and the use of regular carbonation this year instead of nitro - has helped this choc honeycomb beer shine. Hop Nation Opening Doors

Published September 27, 2022
There is a sense of inevitability about Hop Nation’s Opening Doors. The Melbourne brewery were one of the first to jump on the haze craze and have built a reputation for their heavily hopped and lush beers. More recently they’ve also embraced non-alc craft beer† and have found not only fans through it but golden glory too, after securing an AIBA gold medal for their Mind Your Head XPA earlier in the year. It’s from those two camps that Opening Doors emerges, with the alcohol-free hazy pale… Read more

Blackman's Barrel Farm Double Yuzu Wit

Published September 27, 2022
You might not know it if your only association with the stuff is through beer but yuzu is one ugly fruit. With thick skin, a squashed shape and lots of seeds, yuzu looks like a lime gone wrong. But fortunately, like with people, it’s what’s on the inside that counts and yuzu’s unique brand of citrus makes it a fitting adjunct for many beer styles. That’s certainly true for Blackman’s Brewery’s Double Yuzu Wit, which combines Belgian wit yeast, coriander, lemon peel and camomile. But… Read more

Sunday Road Three Day Weekend TDH NEIPA

Published September 26, 2022
If you gave Three Day Weekend TDH NEIPA to me without telling me the style, I wouldn’t guess that it was a triple dry-hopped NEIPA. It pours dark gold, burnt orange colour that isn’t bright, but I wouldn’t go so far as to call it hazy either. The flavours reminded me of Sunday Road’s Bigger Enigma, the double Enigma Ale they brewed as a birthday beer in 2021. Sweet malt and sticky hops join together to give overripe pawpaw and mango, citrus peel, and a healthy dose of resin. There’s also… Read more

Rocky Ridge California Stars & Holy Sh*t I'm A Dad Again

Published September 26, 2022
Demonstrating no desire to slow down their efforts to keep pumping out original beers, Rocky Ridge here have released two freshies for the month of September: a strikingly clear California IPA and a quaffable Belgian witbier. The former, California Stars, is unusually transparent given the current nature of the world of IPAs, but still has a faint haze and a radiating golden hue. On tasting, a simple, clean malt profile carries layers of grassy, piney, berry and ripe stonefruit hop characters. Drinkability… Read more

Cheeky Monkey Black Hole Sun, Redgate & Hyperbole #2

Published September 26, 2022
Although Cheeky Monkey has been busy expanding their production brewery facility in Vasse, they’ve managed to maintain their creative efforts, which take shape with this trio of September releases. There's a triple IPA brewed in collaboration with the beer-loving Grain Cru team, an IPA that plays to the brewery's strength in executing hazy hop bombs, and a variation on their much-loved Silverback. Temple Brewing 666

If you’re going to brew a beer called 666, you better make sure you get the ritual right. A hop out of place here, too much booze over there and suddenly you’re 6.66 percent ABV red IPA is 7.0 percent and a tribute to the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World. Burnley Brewing Freundschaftsbezeugung

Published September 23, 2022
Following the success of Zusammengehörigkeitsgefühl, Burnley Brewing have welcomed Freundschaftsbezeugung for 2022. OK, you may have questions about those statements and that’s fine. After COVID scuppered their Oktoberfest last year, the Melbourne brewery decided to release multiple packs of traditional German beers with a German word that translated to “the feeling of togetherness”. It was such a widely popular concept that the brewery decided to do another pack a year on and this time around,… Read more

King River Brewing Marzen

Published September 23, 2022
King River Brewing’s surrounds might be called Prosecco Road but you could make the case the brewery have turned their home into Germantown (OK, Germantown and Belgiumtown might be more appropriate). Head brewer Nathan Munt loves making German-inspired beers and, when October rolls around, you can expect all manner of Bavarian beers to greet you. (Again we’re stretching the truth a bit here - you’re likely to find such beers at any other time of year too.) Marzen is one such beer, with the… Read more

Lost Palms & BrewDog Lost Dog Named Mango

Published September 22, 2022
My first introduction to this beer was a poster at Lost Palms – not a normal poster, but a lost dog poster with those tear-off slips at the bottom. (So I tore one off, because why wouldn’t you?) It wasn’t until a later date that I actually met Lost Dog Named Mango. It’s a collab between Lost Palms and BrewDog, with the label artwork showing the Brisbane city skyline and a busy Gold-Coast-esque beach.† If you look very carefully at the scene, you can find the dog Mango hiding among the beachgoers.… Read more
