How do you decide between drinking a Mexican lager or a margarita?
¿Por qué no los dos?
Newstead took a crack at this with their Lagerita. Just like a margarita, it’s got real lime juice, orange liquor, and tequila. There’s extra agave in there too, because why not? And rather than salt the rim of each can, which would be a horrendously labour intensive affair and you’d be ridiculed for even suggesting it, the brewers have gone ahead and put salt in the beer. All this is over a base beer that takes advantage of their recent mastery of the crisp rice lager, and provides the blank canvas for the other ingredients to do their thing.
It’s tangy (though also sweet). It’s salty (but not too salty). It’s margarita-y (but also kind of velvety). But while margaritas are around 30 percent ABV, this Lagerita comes in at just 4.4. Much more suitable for drinking three or four in the sun.
Also the Scrubs reference in their Facebook post made me smile. “Thank you for asking, ocho-thirty until upside down question mark. Sombreros at the door.”
