Life can flash by sometimes. One minute you walk into your first craft brewery and are told the difference between a stout and a porter; the next minute you’re collecting barrel-aged imperial stouts and using Excel to work out who you’re going to drink them with and when. Barrel-aged beers are certainly a rabbit hole – one that we dove into with Fox Friday – as they prepared to release their first bourbon-barrel-aged imperial stouts.
So there’s plenty of backstory as to Who. Are.You. came to be, but what flavours lie within each? Volume 1 is wonderfully thick and rich and provides complex layers of malt sweetness, roast and hints of tobacco. Adding to the sense of indulgence are raisins, hints of vanilla, coconut and a bourbon sweetness.
As for Volume 2, it’s less about the hints of vanilla and coconut and more about the hits of it. To make it, the brewers added organic toasted coconut and vanilla beans to bring the sweetness to its highest level. But, while those adjuncts are clear and defined, don’t expect to find anything like a pastry stout; instead it’s wonderfully balanced with the additions tying nicely into dark fruit, chocolate and a bitter finish.
