It's only weeks since Fox Friday made their foray into the world of barrel-aged beers – as covered by Will Ziebell elsewhere on this site – and it's taken little time for them to step out again, doing so in the company of a brewery that's been playing in this space rather longer. One Friday is beer five in the 2024 Carwyn Cellars Black Box, a bourbon barrel-aged imperial pastry stout featuring cacao and vanilla created alongside One Drop.
Nobody au fait with the twosome's respective outputs would expect them to do this by halves, and so it proves. The beer swirls around your glass like sump oil with a head darker than most dark ales; one sip and it’s like descending into a gloopy swamp. Rich doesn’t even come close to describing the experience.
It’s like The Bog Of Eternal Stench if the stench was bourbon, choc fudge marshmallows and the remnants of a patisserie's sweet-tooth section after a date with a blender.
