In craft beer there's conventional and there's, well, sour pink stouts.
Likely the most left of centre beer from the team at Eagle Bay, this is a riff on their existing Cacao Stout and draws inspiration from the Papua New Guinea cacao bean, renowned for it's uncanny raspberry and coffee scent. Brewer Keegan Steinbacher wanted to emulate the unique flavours and aromas found in the world famous beans so brewed a clean, sour base beer and packed it to the brim with raspberry, The Cape Effect coffee beans and cacao husks.
Pouring a vibrant off-pink, this beer immediately emits bold aromas of coffee and chocolate, quickly followed by sweet raspberry. While not a beer you'd file under the stout banner based on appearance alone, amazingly there isn't much room for doubt on tasting, the only anomaly being the raspberry driven acidity that fades as quickly as it begins, without overshadowing the dusty cacao and rich coffee.
An intriguingly complex beer with layers of flavour and aroma, it's fun to drink and keeps you questioning with every sip.
