Eagle Bay Brewing Co’s latest limited release, an oak-aged Vienna lager, is the result of a collaborative effort between the coastal brewers and Perth craft beer slinging stalwarts Copper & Oak. The two venues boast nearly 30 years of combined experience in craft beer, which is well reflected in this classic style brewed with modern variation.
Eagle Bay are no strangers to the idea of a good Vienna lager, having previously featured one in their lineup for some time. Their fresh take on the style in 2021, however, features a five week stint in French oak, contributing silky smooth notes of sweet vanilla and subtle toasted coconut which integrate seamlessly with malt characters of toffee, biscuit and caramel. Hops play a supporting role here, adding some balancing bitterness and a touch of pine and citrus zest aromatics. Brilliant clarity, a crisp mouthfeel and lasting finish are indicative of great brewing technique, as well as generally boosting appeal.
Oaked Vienna Lager is a beer built around bold flavour, with oak and malt combining to create a complex drop with noteworthy balance thanks to restrained hopping, extensive lagering and a clean yeast profile, all giving rise to refreshing drinkability, which is particularly agreeable given the rapidly cooling weather. Eagle Bay and Copper & Oak know good beer, so it's of no surprise their collective effort respects tradition, while also showcasing a modern, creative edge.
