Perfectly timed for Perth’s slowly building autumnal vibe, Modern Rustic equally references the Maylands brewery’s aesthetic and the farmhouse expression in the glass. Using a similar malt bill to their Otis red IPA, saison yeast and Brettanomyces they capture the glory of this style while keeping it approachable enough for new punters, or as a growler collecting punter commented: “It’s an anytime beer.”
The initial pineapple and guava nose soon shifts to a plummy malt and Brett interplay with burnt caramel and flashes of muted dark cherry, yet Modern Rustic remains light and quaffable. The initial Brett aroma is subtle; however, as the glass warms this becomes more pronounced along with yeast-derived light spice which is, like the beer itself, interesting and approachable.
