"Make IPAs black again!"
It’s amazing the fervour that a new release of a hype style from seven years ago can illicit. The passionate online cries that have surrounded the release of this beer in parts of the WA beer scene are well founded, however, as Seasonal and collaborators Cellarbrations Carlisle have delivered a very authentic take on the style, yet one informed by brewing progressions of the last near decade.
For starters, Azacca hops deliver tropical aromas to supplant the citrus / pine mix of 2014, although there remains resin and plenty of roasted malt, dark chocolate and bitterness throughout the slightly creamy body that ultimately runs dry.
As the first canned Seasonal beer, it comes with some much commented on modern rustic meets local nature influenced artwork by Travis Kenney, which ably represents the brewery’s aesthetic.
