It seems the love for lager isn’t isn’t going anywhere as brewers enjoy a bubbling new trend. West Coast pilsners are enjoying some time in the sun as parts of the country are also heating up, with the style blending the clean and lean side of lagers with the heavy hopping rates of an IPA. Does it sound all a bit Cold IPA? Maybe, but you can’t help but wonder if this style is a little easier to get the intention across.
The Mill Brewery's own WC pils (for the time poor) certainly taps into that sense of a warm glow, with Solana a sparkling, crystal clear and golden affair. It saw the brewery took premium German malts, the European classic hop Hersbrucker and New Zealand's Nelson Sauving while it was dip and dry hopped with Simcoe and the experimental HBC522. That continent and time crossing combination of hops brings a broad array of notes that moves between citrus, passionfruit, white grape and pine meets a more herbaceous quality that leans into a lasting bitterness.
