Deadwood’s cancellation remains one of modern TV’s greatest crimes and, while we did get to enjoy a movie some years later, that took an awful long time. Beer drinkers don’t have to wait as long for The Mill Brewery’s Deadwood Red, however, with the red IPA a regularly returning favourite from the brewery. It returns in 2023 in smaller, 375ml cans for the first time but it still brings a surprisingly dry finish for beer rich in caramel, toffee and biscuit, accompanied by hop-derived orange, grapefruit zest, mango and pine.
On the other hand, Cannonball is a brand new one from The Mill: a scotch ale aged in oak. It pours a deep brown that's close to black and possesses a smokiness that runs across the palate like a rauchbier. But compared to the Bamberg classic, brown sugar, a roasted nuttiness and chocolate are rather more prominent.
