The Woolshed brewers in South Australian’s Riverland are well known collaborators, often working with other local artisanal producers. Local companies provide the wattle seed used in their Judas dark ale, coffee for the Firehouse Coffee stout, and a variety of fruits and juice extracts featured elsewhere. Now they can add almonds to that list, teaming up with Almondco to help them celebrate their 75th year of operation. The roasted crushed almonds were added to a sweet porter alongside organic cocoa nibs and lactose.
The chocolate malt gives the scorched almond porter a very dark brown colour, although it's strong coffee and hazelnut aromas that kick off proceedings in this medium-full-bodied porter, supported by some subtle dark chocolate and a little sweet milk. The coffee again dominates flavour wise, with the almonds coming through gently on the back palate, and lactose ensuring the roast is softened with a little milky sweetness that lingers. Happy birthday, Almondco!
