Margaret River Beer Co figured they’d slip in one more limited release before heading off for their Chrissy break, but don’t be fooled: this robust number wasn’t a last-minute fluke, but a calculated effort that spent months in oak before being released to the masses.
Panther Claus, a barrel-aged imperial cherry stout, is ripe for festive season gluttony courtesy of its rich, luscious malt character and 10 percent ABV. Building on their annually released Panther Cream imperial stout, this iteration is boosted with the addition of fresh cherries, which is apparent in a flavour profile in which bitter chocolate, mocha and burnt toffee sit alongside sweet, prominent cherry character akin to Dr Pepper or cherry cola. Barrel impact is less prominent as a result but still shines with earthy spirit notes, brandy, soft smoke and vanilla.
Panther Claus is smooth, complex, and perfect for slower sipping. Paired with festive cheer – perhaps some fruit cake, too – it’s a beer worth taking your time over, and a great upgrade to the MRBCo Panther series of imperial stouts.
