Being big fans of each other's work, Margaret River Brewhouse’s choice of partner for their debut collaboration will come as no surprise to those that know them. What's more, given they share a passion for Strata hops with their mates from up the road at King Road Brewing, neither does the inspiration behind the beer. However, what the unknown was the vehicle, which arrives as a modern West Coast IPA.
NB: Modern.
Those expecting a bold, full-bodied, classically-leaning West Coast IPA may miss the balanced focus here. The malt sweetness is almost juicy, while Strata’s influence offers melon, strawberry jam and passionfruit, with Citra and NZH107 in a supporting role, providing sweet citrus. There's a lasting bitter ebb – a reminder of its West Coast style origins – in what is very much a close encounters of the Strata kind.
