Margaret River Beer Co’s Backyard Brewers competition took place for the eighth year in a row late in 2023 and, as is custom, the winner earned the privilege of brewing their beer for commercial release. The champion was Rob Stott with his Single Pringle Trappist single (think Chimay Gold), a beer that blurs the line between session beer and estery, full-flavoured Belgian ale.
The 5.9 percent ABV leans modest, but this easy-drinker still packs a yeast-derived fruity profile, light candy sweetness and soft noble hop notes. White pepper, clove, white peach and soft, woody herbs all combine atop a base beer that holds a medium body and long-lasting finish. As expected, bitterness is low against some residual malt sweetness for smoothness and balance.
Each year, MRBCo’s Backyard Brewing competition attracts plenty of talented brewers to test their skills, and each year the winning beer seems to top the previous, all while celebrating WA’s collaborative craft beer and homebrewing scene.
