Rocky Ridge have established a reputation as the kings of collaboration. Their efforts in the collaborative space seem to know no bounds. From growers of grain and hops to surf brands, from venues and social media personalities to fellow brewers, the list of collaborators to have worked with the Jindong brewers is almost endless.
Their latest, OA is brewed in collaboration with Australian producer and musician ShockOne. If you’re wondering, it isn’t their first foray into collaborating with a musician, either: Aussie rock band Kingswood have put out a Rocky Ridge beer in the past.
But this release – a 6.5 percent ABV West Coast IPA referencing Karl Thomas' new album Organism Algorithm – goes large, matching ShockOne’s hefty drum and bass tracks. This writer isn’t prepared to make too many more comparisons between beer and electronic music, given a lack of knowledge of the genre, but, importantly, this beer slaps, as the kids may or may not say. True to its West Coast stylings, this hop-driven number offers almost crystal clear clarity and a dense white head. On tasting, a crisp, cleansing body with firm but balanced bitterness matches aromas of ripe stone fruits, bright citrus, sticky pine and a subtle marijuana note. It finishes clean and light with pithy thiol notes persisting.
Over the past couple of weeks, Rocky Ridge have also released the 13th iteration of Rock Juice (11 percent ABV), Who Kil’d Kenny Irish red ale (4.3 percent ABV), Cookies and Cream milk stout (5.5 percent ABV), Eagle Rock v5 in collaboration with Eagle Bay (6 percent ABV), Wet Hop Ace IPA (6.8 percent ABV), Can I Pet That Dog wet hop XPA (4.2 percent ABV), Charlie mango, raspberry, bubble-gum, and vanilla pastry sour (8 percent ABV) and Hot Cross Bunny hot cross bun stout (7 percent ABV).
