No doubt it won't be too long before the flick from light to dark is switched at Swell Brewery but, for now at least, they're still hanging on to summery vibes in McLaren Vale, with a trio of recent releases perfect for drinking in the sun.
The newest of the bunch is Best Coast, which sees them referencing the East vs West Coast debate, both in terms of IPA styles and hip hop. However, when it comes to the coastline of South Australia, the area's surfing culture, and indeed this beer, West Coast reigns supreme. Chinook, Simcoe and Citra go to work, presenting a dominant pine character, while candied orange peel and some herbal notes mingle in the background. The bitterness is bold and on point, with just a touch of malt sweetness along for the ride.
The other two have been out since, well, summer, but took a while to reach our hands – presumably the brewery team was busy enjoying 2024's late arriving summer. Summer Sessions is an easy-drinker showcasing just one hop: Superdelic is invited to show off its magic atop a light malt base. Pouring like a bright sunny day, it's teeming with passionfruit and pineapple. The malts contribute a little biscuit and light toast, but this, with bitterness minimal and the finish dry and crisp.
Summer Haze is another addition to Swell's long line of hazy, juicy IPAs, utilising the services of Amarillo, Idaho 7 and El Dorado and referencing the hazy mirage often seen on the highway on a hot day. It comes acoss like an adult version of drinking orange juice in the sun; the beer leads with heaps of orange citrus before a little apricot chimes in, supported by a hint of resin. The bitterness is there but not so much that it takes away from any of the juiciness.
