Years ago, I visited a folk festival in Nuremberg during August. Effectively, it was their equivalent of Oktoberfest, and as I chatted with my fellow stein drinkers and sausage eaters, one friend of a friend sheepishly mentioned their recent coeliac diagnosis. They were glad to know what had been causing them grief, but as someone who loved indulging in every aspect of Bavarian culture, the inability to drink beer during the best time to do so was always a little challenging.
If only that bespectacled German man, whose name I can’t remember, could know what I know now: there would come a time. That time is 2024, and that place is Australia, thanks to TWØBAYS making a gluten-free Märzen in time for all things Oztoberfest. As is the way with gluten-free brewers, if you’re searching for how their amber German lager differs from those filled with gluten, you’ll be looking for a while. What you will find is rich malt notes akin to sweet bread, some spiced floral aromas courtesy of Hallertau Mittlefrüh, and a building bitter finish.
Prost, my old German friend; this beer would have agreed with you.
