Tallboy & Moose Boysenberry Zing Tang & Lecker Hammer & Party Like It's 1999

Tallboy and Moose

Published October 22, 2018

There's another trio of new beers pouring at Preston’s Tallboy & Moose and it includes the newest member in a long running line of kettle sours, a trendy tribute to Germany and throwback to the days when discmans and boy bands dominated the music industry.

The first of those, and the lowest in terms of ABV, is Boysenberry Zing Tang. Part of the brewery’s ongoing Tang series that layers a different fruit upon the same Berliner weisse base, this Zing possesses a similar refreshing, clean and light tartness as its predecessors. The boysenberry is pretty obvious too, as is a sweetness there to balance the tartness.

Second up is Lecker Hammer, the brewery’s take on the beer that’s enjoyed by the more than six million people who make it to Oktoberfest each year. The name combines two German slang words: Lecker, meaning tasty, and Hammer, which means something like “right on”. Together, though they aren’t a common phrase when combined, the name can be understood as something along the lines of "deliciously awesome". The use of Magnum and Perle hops gives it a spicy and floral side with the beer’s amber malt base contributing a slightly sweet, though clean breadiness.

Finally, there’s Party Like It’s 1999, an American IIPA that’s inspired by the days before brewers started making their hop bombs as pale as possible. It pours a dark amber and the combination of Cascade, Chinook, Columbus and Summit hops provides for one resinous and piney beer, although there’s still elements of citrus in there too. It’s a big beer in terms of bitterness too, although that’s balanced slightly by the toffee and caramel, which brings the beer closer to highly hopped ESB territory. An old school beer the brewers say is best enjoyed while blasting the Red Hot Chilli Peppers on your discman.
