As Melbourne venues look to reopen, Tallboy & Moose's new release machine keeps whirring, with three beers ready for taps and available in crowlers direct from the Preston brewpub. Terminal Velocity has been dubbed a Juicy Kveik IPA brewed with Galaxy and Lotus, a new American hop breed officially launched last year. The historic (but new-to-many brewers) Norwegian yeast mixed with the modern hops brings a touch of tart lime and grapefruit along with passionfruit and some vanilla to match with the beer's soft mouthfeel.
Next up is Solid Gold, a DDH hazy IPA led by American hops Bravo, El Dorado and Centennial. Even for a style known for its cloudiness, this is a particularly soft, creamy and all-round luscious IPA. The hops push out an impressive mix of tropical flavours – from guava, pineapple, pawpaw – plus stone fruit, some candied mandarin and a touch of pine in the sort of kaleidoscopic fashion of many such beers today.
Finally, there’s Chaiger King, a chai spiced stout named after Netflix's biggest documentary mini-series (at least until The Last Dance was released). Using a chai blend of Tallboy’s own creation that includes cardamom, liquorice root, cinnamon bark, black peppercorn, clove and ginger, there’s really only a single thing you can say about the beer: if you like chai when it's properly made and particularly fragrant, you’ll enjoy Chaiger King as those flavours match well against a roasted malt base. Also #FreeJoe. So, maybe there's two things to say about the beer.
