In 2020, the year of disorientation, Modus released the fittingly named Lost in the Fog. Between the GABS festival mixed packs, the volume poured at Modus’ Mona Vale headquarters, and the subsequent tinnie re-release due to popular demand, this hazy XPA had plenty of people clamouring to Modus to bring it back.
Since many of us have found ourselves in a fog again in 2021, Modus have answered the call. But rather than simply brew the same beer again, they’ve responded with Lost in the Fog 2.0 – an amped up version that they’re calling a tropical hazy IPA.
Like the original, it has less haze than many light-blockers on the market. There have been some minor tweaks to the malt bill, but there’s still that stupidly fluffy softness that allows you to inhale this beer rather than drink it. Truckloads of tropicals pump straight from the glass to your nose thanks to the triple dry-hopping, but the mango and pawpaw and pineapple also make way for a friend – a ping of dankness kicking it with the fruits and bringing just enough bitterness to keep things interesting.
While Lost in the Fog 2.0 is beginning its rollout in September, in my mind the sunset-hued colouring of the can represents the sun going down on 2021. Let’s hope 2022 will get us out of the fog, and instead get more fog into us.
