Modus’ double release might seem like two very different beers at first but dive a little deeper and there’s a symmetry at play. Social Club is a mango wheat ale that provides fresh mango aromas and flavours, with the smooth and textural mouthfeel of a wheat ale. Although there’s a light touch of sweetness from the fruit, that’s in there in light enough proportions that you might just be able to over to win over a German brewmaster with the mostly classic, Reinheitsgebot-breaking beer.
Outer Disco meanwhile, is pretty unlikely to keep that brewmaster happy, with the release a milky tea beer. Made with lactose and black tea, there’s a bit of biscuit flavour, black tea tannins and a sweet layer from the milk sugar that runs across the palate. The brewery recmmoneds getting a packet of Tapioca pearls to turn it into a bubble tea experience and while that might be a good move, it was here where I realised what could connect the two beers. Add a dash of Social Club to Outer Disco and not only do you have the name of a Meredith Music Festival campsite, but you’d also have quite a delightfully fruity, milky tea beer.
