Late in 2021, Modus opened their second home in the Newcastle suburb of Merewether and, with two breweries in close proximity to beaches, the addition of Cerveza Beer almost seems to have an air of inevitability. And, even though they made their name early on with rather bigger and more hyped beers like Former Tenant and all manner of big IPAs, they've also tested more mainstream tastes in the past with the likes of Pittwater Draught. That said, this is a push a little further into the mainstream, complete with a whole new look for the brand as the beer landed in their core range before the close of 2021.
Cerveza Beer is inspired by Mexico’s light lagers – the most well-known of which you may have consumed straight from a clear glass bottle with a lime stuck in the neck – and is suitably pale in colour too. It's likewise a beer the brewery suggests enjoying with a wedge of lime, but given there’s a little citrus aroma there already, that might not be all that necessary (and the way lime prices fluctuate, Modus might be saving you a fair bit here). Aside from that, you won’t find too much else demanding your attention in a beer designed with quenching in mind, other than some grainy sweetness and the faintest hint of bitterness.
